Speaking

My career makes much more sense looking backward than it ever did looking forward.

Many of the roles I have held were new; new to an organization, new in their form, or experiments in what a position could become. Other chapters began because I followed a question, accepted an opportunity I hadn’t planned for, or took a leap before knowing exactly where it would lead.

That path has taken me through dance, nonprofit leadership, organizational culture, higher education, research, arts and health, and emerging technology. What connects those experiences is not a carefully constructed career plan, but curiosity, a willingness to move before everything is certain, and an ability to carry what I have learned from one seemingly unrelated place into the next.

Perhaps that is part of the challenge of imagining a future: we have to live it forward, with only the privilege of understanding it backward.

That tension, and what it asks of us as we navigate work, creativity, purpose, and change, is one of the conversations I most enjoy having with audiences.

My speaking also draws from the work itself, including creative practice, higher education, arts and health, organizational life, research, and emerging technology.
